Editorial: Advances in the treatment of early-onset scoliosis?

چکیده
curvature of the spine under the age of 10 years, are offered surgical treatment when the major curvature remains progressive despite conservative treatment. Spinal fusion is not recommended in this age group, as it prevents spinal growth and pulmonary development. A growth-sparing technique using traditional growing rods has been commonly used, but requires distraction under general anaesthesia every 6 months, and a child may require as many as 15 operations throughout the entire treatment.1 The number and frequency of such distractions is correlated with complication rates and unplanned surgical procedures. A magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR) is a novel technology that enables non-invasive spinal lengthening in an awake patient in an out-patient setting. The indications for MCGR are identical to those of traditional growing rods, but MCGR has advantages of obviating the need for repeated surgical distractions. Cheung et al.2 first demonstrated efficacy and safety of this implant system in its ability to maintain curve correction and allow spinal growth. Determination of different types of scoliosis based on the apex of the spinal curve in adolescents
Background: Scoliosis is a Greek word for crocked and is an often referred as an shape side to side curves of spine. The spinal column twists and rotates creating an uneven shoulder and a rib hump, which can lead to breathing problems as the heart and lungs became compressed. Early detection, can increase the chances of successful treatment. The treatment of scoliosis varies depending on severi...

متن کاملEarly-Onset Scoliosis: A Review of History, Current Treatment, and Future Directions.
Early-onset scoliosis (EOS) is defined as curvature of the spine in children >10° with onset before age 10 years. Young children with EOS are at risk for impaired pulmonary function because of the high risk of progressive spinal deformity and thoracic constraints during a critical time of lung development. The treatment of EOS is very challenging because the population is inhomogeneous, often m...
متن کاملINSTRUCTIONAL LECTURE Updates on surgical treatments for pediatric scoliosis
Scoliosis in children poses serious problems including respiratory problems, trunk imbalance, and depression, as well as detracting from the child’s appearance. Scoliosis can also contribute to back pain later in life. Advanced surgical techniques allow for good correction and maintenance of progressive curves, and growth-sparing treatments are now available for patients with early-onset scolio...
متن کاملEvaluating the extent of clinical uncertainty among treatment options for patients with early-onset scoliosis.
BACKGROUND Literature guiding the management of early-onset scoliosis consists primarily of studies with a low level of evidence. Evaluation of clinical equipoise (i.e., when there is no known superiority among treatment modalities) allows for prioritization of research efforts. The objective of this study was to evaluate areas of clinical uncertainty among pediatric spine surgeons regarding th...
